Roads are expected to become dangerous or impassable due to ice, snow, and freezing rain. Deputies and other area law enforcement, including work crews will be out in force this weekend to respond to crashes and weather-related emergencies as icy conditions develop on roadways.
Despite increased patrols, the Nolan County Sheriff's Office strongly urges everyone to stay off the roads and avoid becoming stranded. For those who must travel, below are some basic tips on how to prepare and stay safe:
Preparation & Emergency Kits
Avoid travel: The safest option is to remain home.
Check road conditions: Visit DriveTexas.org or call 800-452-9292 before planning any travel.
Prep your vehicle: Fill your gas tank, check tire pressure and tread, and ensure your battery is strong.
Pack an emergency kit: If you must drive, carry blankets, extra clothing, flashlights, water, non-perishable snacks, a phone charger, booster cables, and a shovel.
Driving Safety Tips
If you must drive, exercise extreme caution:
New vehicle technology: Driver-assist systems that automatically brake can increase the risk of losing control on slick roads. Turn driver-assist features off and make sure you are in complete control of the vehicle.
Slow down significantly: Ice reduces traction, making normal speeds dangerous.
Increase following distance: Allow at least three times more space than usual between you and other vehicles.
Avoid bridges and overpasses: These freeze first and are the most dangerous spots.
No cruise control: Do not use cruise control in icy or snowy conditions.
If you slide: Ease off the gas or brakes and steer in the direction of the skid.
What to Do If Stranded
Stay with your vehicle: Do not attempt to walk for help unless safety is immediately nearby.
Be seen: Turn on hazard lights and use dome lights to help responders locate you.
Avoid carbon monoxide: If idling your vehicle for heat, ensure the exhaust tailpipe is not blocked by snow or ice.
