The Nolan County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the launch of its new Detention Excellence Recognition Program. This initiative is designed to twice yearly recognize the exceptional hard work, dedication, and invaluable efforts put forth by the support staff and detention officers assigned to the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office Detention Division.

The program shines a spotlight on those who go above and beyond to maintain the safety, security, and high standards of the facility. The Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce the first-ever honorees for the month of June.

Support Staff Spotlight: Monica Vera

Monica Vera has been named the inaugural Support Staff Spotlight recipient. Monica has been a dedicated pillar of the Sheriff’s Office for 10 years, heading into her 11th year of service.

As the Kitchen Manager at the jail, Monica plays a very important role in the facility's daily operations. Her extensive responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing all daily nutritional and sanitation operations.

  • Managing the purchasing and tracking of all food, cleaning chemicals, and laundry supplies.

  • Supervising and training non-violent inmate workers in preparing compliant meals and operating industrial laundry equipment.

  • Maintaining strict food inventory and flawlessly upholding the rigorous health and safety standards mandated by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS).

Detention Officer Standout: Christen Reed

Christen Reed has been selected as the first Detention Officer Standout. Though she has been with the Sheriff’s Office for just over a year, Christen has quickly proven herself to be an invaluable asset to the extraordinary detention team.

She is being recognized for her stellar work ethic and her consistent willingness to go above and beyond her daily responsibilities. In her role as a detention officer, Christen is tasked with:

  • Overseeing the complex security of the jail facility.

  • Booking and processing new arrestees, fingerprinting, photographing.

  • Processing inmates for release

  • Collecting, inventory and securely store inmate personal property.

  • Ensuring the safety, dignity, and overall well-being of the detainees.

  • Maintaining a secure and protective environment for her fellow staff members.

"In my eyes, every one of our detention officers and support staff deserve this recognition because of all the outstanding work they do," said Sheriff James Villanueva. "While we chose to honor four standout employees each year, I want to remind the public that our detention officers work tirelessly behind the scenes in dangerous conditions, and often face risks that go unnoticed. The Detention Excellence Recognition Program that Corporal J.C. Watts designed, allows us to honor individuals like Monica and Christen for their hard work and dedication."

Please join the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office in congratulating Monica Vera and Christen Reed for their outstanding service and well-deserved recognition.
