Preparing Today to Protect Tomorrow

On Sunday and Monday, Nolan County Sheriff James Villanueva and members of the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office partnered with local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, telecommunicators, and other emergency-response partners for specialized ALERRT AAIR training. The exercise focused on improving communication and coordination among agencies during an active attack or active-shooter event and was conducted to meet the requirements of Texas House Bill 33, known as the Uvalde Strong Act.

The training focused on strengthening communication, coordination, and interoperability among agencies responding to an active attack or active-shooter event. On Monday afternoon, participants gathered at Roscoe High School for realistic emergency-response exercises designed to enhance interagency teamwork, identify opportunities for improvement, and ensure personnel are better prepared to respond effectively during a critical incident.

Sheriff Villanueva and Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Trey Valencia coordinated the HB 33 training, bringing multiple agencies together for the exercise and later incorporating ALERRT AAIR instruction.

“Protecting our communities requires more than simply completing a training exercise,” Sheriff Villanueva said. “It takes preparation, teamwork, and a commitment to being ready when an emergency occurs. The safety of our children, school staff, and all Nolan County residents remains a top priority.”

He added that continued training and coordination among law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, and other emergency-response partners help agencies prepare to protect lives and respond effectively when seconds matter most.

Sheriff Villanueva expressed his sincere appreciation to the ALERRT Instructors, and all agencies, organizations, and volunteers who participated. He also extended his gratitude to the Roscoe Consolidated Independent School District administration for hosting exercises on its campus and to the administration and Police Department at Texas State Technical College for providing its campus as a training location.

Their support and cooperation made the training possible and gave participants an important opportunity to strengthen emergency-response coordination.

“This is the kind of training we hope and pray we never have to use in a real-life situation,” Sheriff Villanueva said. “However, your safety, the safety of our children, and the safety of our communities are too important to leave to chance. We train, we prepare, and we work together because protecting our communities is a responsibility we take seriously.”
