The Nolan County Sheriff's Office Jail Division remains committed to public safety while also supporting inmate rehabilitation and successful reintegration into the community. Through voluntary programs, the Jail Division provides inmates with opportunities to gain valuable work experience and job skills prior to release.

One of the most common programs offered is the Inmate Work Program, which allows qualifying inmates to assist with essential jail operations, including laundry services, inmate meal preparation, trash collection and disposal, general housekeeping, and assignments at select off-site locations.

Inmates assigned to kitchen and meal preparation duties may also complete the Texas Food Handler Training Certificate Program. Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate and pocket card, providing them with a recognized credential that can be used to seek employment in the food service industry upon release.

Since October 2025, four inmates have successfully obtained their Texas Food Handler Training Certificate through this program.

One participant, Eric Acosta, recently earned his certification and expressed appreciation for the opportunity. “I want to thank Israel Vera for giving me this chance and Marsha Harris for setting the course up for me. When I get out, I think it’ll make it easier for me to get a good job,” said Acosta.

Jail Administrator Marsha Harris and Jail Sergeant Israel Vera said, “These programs give inmates who participate the skills they can carry into life after release. Eric earned his food handler license and when released, he'll be ready to enter the workforce as a productive member of our community.”
