AI Voice Cloning Scams

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere. From our vehicles and security cameras to smartphones, everyday appliances, and even the images on this post, most of us have interacted with AI in one way or another. While this technology offers many benefits, criminals are finding new ways to exploit it to scam innocent people.

One emerging concern is AI voice cloning, which can allow scammers to imitate the voice of someone you know and trust, even a family member.

HOW THE SCAM WORKS

Scammers may call you and engage you in conversation to obtain a sample of your voice. They may use that recording, along with AI technology, to generate a convincing imitation of your voice and contact your family members while pretending to be you.

The caller may claim they have lost their phone or wallet, become stranded at a gas station, forgotten their bank card, or urgently need money to get home. In other cases, they may claim to have been involved in a car crash, kidnapped, or arrested and need bail money immediately. These scripts are designed to create panic and a false sense of urgency, hoping your loved ones will act quickly without taking the time to verify the situation.

YOUR VOICE CAN BE USED AGAINST YOU

A voice that sounds familiar is no longer reliable proof of someone's identity. Scammers may use recorded speech or other available audio to imitate a person. They may also attempt to collect additional voice samples from people they contact, potentially expanding their ability to impersonate members of the same family.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY

  1. Establish a family verbal password. Choose a unique word or phrase that only trusted family members know. Use it to verify identity during unexpected calls involving emergencies, money, or sensitive information.

  2. Never rely on a familiar-sounding voice alone. AI can imitate voices well enough to fool people.

  3. Hang up and call back. Use a phone number you already have saved or independently know belongs to the person, not a number provided by the caller.

  4. Verify emergencies independently. If someone claims to be stranded, injured, or in trouble, contact them through another method or verify the circumstances with a trusted person.

  5. Never rush into sending money or sharing information. Do not provide passwords, verification codes, banking information, or personal details based solely on an unexpected call.

  6. Be cautious about what you share publicly. Videos, voice recordings, and other audio posted online may provide material that criminals can misuse.

REMEMBER: STOP. VERIFY. THEN RESPOND.

If you receive a call that sounds exactly like your spouse, child, parent, or another loved one, do not assume it is really them. Take a moment, verify their identity using your family's agreed-upon method, and independently confirm the situation before taking action.

Talk with your spouse and children today. Establish a family password or phrase and make sure everyone knows what to do if they receive a suspicious call.

The Nolan County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to stay alert, protect their personal information, and share this warning with family members, especially those who may be more vulnerable to phone scams.

Your ears may recognize the voice. Verification confirms the person.
