Patrol Deputy
SALARY:
$5,719.13 monthly or $32.99 per hour (after probationary period)

ANNUAL CERTIFIED SALARY: $68,629.50
Standard probationary period of 6 months during which time salary is reduced by $50.00 per month.

The DEPUTY SHERIFF (PATROL) protects life and property by enforcing state and local laws and ordinances. Conducts patrol activities, apprehends suspects, responds to service calls and conducts traffic stops. Conducts investigations and searches, assists the Criminal Investigations Division with special operations, writes reports and provides court security and testimony. Transports inmates to and from the court system, and prison facilities. May perform other related duties as required, and functions may vary by individual assignment. Work is performed under the direction of a Patrol Sergeant, and functions may vary by individual assignment.

LICENSE REQUIRED:
Applicants must already be licensed as a Peace Officer with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or be able to meet all requirements to become fully licensed as a Texas Peace Officer. Law Enforcement Academy sponsorship will be considered, including paid tuition, for the right qualified applicant.

SHIFT:
Standard 5-day (40 hour) work week (7:00AM - 4:00PM, 6:00Pm - 2:00AM or 4:00PM - 1:00AM) with two days off, and an hour for meal break during each shift. May be required to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with varying days off as necessitated by operational requirements.
REGULAR PAY DAYS:
Payday occurs biweekly (every two weeks) on Fridays, resulting in a total of 26 pay periods each calendar year. In instances where a payday coincides with a holiday or weekend, payroll will be processed on the business day preceding the holiday or weekend.
PAID OVERTIME:
Overtime compensation is calculated at a rate of 1.5 times the standard hourly wage and is reflected in every paycheck. Additionally, a supplementary state grant amounting to $10,000.00 is factored into the total salary figure. The established base salary for the county is set at $58,629.50.

RESIDENCY:
Must reside within the boundaries of Nolan County, in an adjacent county or within one-hour maximum drive time that includes allowances for traffic and/or inclement weather.
LONGEVITY PAY:
For each year of completed service after five years, the amount is set at $5.00 per month.
Employees with six to ten years of service will receive $10.00 per month for each year of completed service.
For those who have rendered ten to fifteen years of service, the compensation increases to $15.00 per month for each year of completed service, with this rate applying thereafter.
HEALTH, DENTAL AND LIFE INSURANCE:
Excellent major medical health insurance (currently Blue Cross/Blue Shield) is provided for the employee at no cost. Dental insurance coverage is also provided for the employee as well as a $10,000 life insurance policy. Dependent health and dental coverages are available with monthly premiums paid by the employee.
LEAVE TIME:
80 hours of vacation per year. (120 hrs. of vacation per year after 10 years of County service); 13 paid holidays (8 hrs. per holiday - 104 hours annually); 8 hours of sick leave accumulated per month up to a maximum of 480 hours.
RETIREMENT:
Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS) – Nolan County contributes $2.00 (200% match) for each dollar the employee has withheld. (Beginning January 1, 2026)
UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT:
Uniforms, coats, duty gear, ballistic vests, radios, and firearms are provided to personnel. The firearms issued include semi-automatic pistols for both on-duty and off-duty use, in addition to a semi-automatic tactical patrol rifle and a tactical pump shotgun. Each individual is assigned a well-equipped, take-home fleet vehicle.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Include the ability to react to physical confrontations and emergency situations quickly and effectively; perform tasks requiring dexterity and agility after running moderate distances; see and recall visual details; hear and understand speech and radio transmissions; visual acuity in both eyes correctable to 20/30 vision, normal color vision, good accommodation and no field deficits; recognize differences or changes in sound patterns, loudness or pitch; communicate clearly in person and via a police radio and/or phone; identify and distinguish smells of different materials; operate a computer (Windows); read/write (police reports, legal documents, etc.); perform multiple physical tasks simultaneously; drive an automobile; qualify with a department authorized firearm and defensive weapons; wear required uniform articles and safety equipment for extended periods of time; wear and use a respirator; sit or stand for prolonged periods; walk, run, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch; make precise and coordinated finger, hand and limb movements; maintain uniform, controlled hand-arm posture or movement; push, pull or drag an adult (averaging 5’6”, 160 pounds); lift and carry boxes of evidence (average 50 pounds); use force to restrain/subdue others; be able to run, protect him/herself by employing defensive tactics, and administer first aid and work efficiently for long periods of time. Performance of these tasks can involve maximum physical exertion with little or no prior notice, and possibly for extended periods of time. May be exposed to extreme noise levels, hazardous substances, body fluids, communicable diseases and may subjected to verbal and physical abuse.
